  • Milpitas Sobrato Center for Nonprofits, Room #1 (map)

An effective team is a great asset to your organization; an ineffective one can damage productivity and morale, and can be detrimental to your long-term organizational health. As we all know, teams are made up of individuals with different work experience and backgrounds, each with his or her own particular working style and expertise. These dynamics can often lead to conflict when colleagues don't have the tools they need to work together. CEN can help! This full-day session will show teams how to use an understanding of individuals' social styles and values to create a more effective working environment, leverage collective assets, and work together more strategically. Participants will discover ways to identify barriers, such as implicit vs. explicit agreements, explore how to use team charters to set yourselves up for success, as well as tips for great team meetings. You must register in groups of at least 3 team members ... we encourage full team participation for maximum impact.

The process of hiring new employees often takes a significant investment of time and energy. It can be tempting to cut corners… but in the long run, hiring the wrong employee is not only disruptive to your team, it also ends up being even more time consuming and expensive. On the other hand, hiring the right employee - and setting them up for success - can help propel your mission forward. In this workshop, you will learn tips to assess and define your organization’s needs and values before you begin the hiring process, gain insight to develop strong job descriptions that will attract the right talent, and examine the interview process and how you can embed case studies to better evaluate candidates.

It’s time to stop looking in the rear view mirror and begin to look forward! Strategic Planning should not be a one-time board retreat task that then sits on a shelf between revisions. Instead, we need to develop the ability to continuously think and act strategically. In this session, we will explore various approaches to strategic planning and will take a look at how organizations with a limited budget can either tackle this daunting process on their own, or assess what to contract for in order to make those dollars go farther
