Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto is seeking a Managing Attorney for its Immigration Program, a vital role that focuses on keeping families together and fostering economic resilience in the face of a challenging immigration system. This position involves providing mentorship and professional development to a team of staff and pro bono volunteers, assisting with grant management and data accountability, and engaging in advocacy work to influence change within the system. The Managing Attorney will represent CLSEPA at various conferences and community events, provide legal advice and representation in immigration matters across multiple forums, and manage a diverse caseload while ensuring accurate recordkeeping. Staying informed on immigration law and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders are also essential aspects of this role, allowing CLSEPA to continue its critical work in supporting and advocating for clients.

Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto (CLSEPA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 by community leaders engaged in the social justice movement. Our mission is to provide transformative legal services that enable diverse communities in East Palo Alto and beyond to achieve a secure and thriving future. We serve low-income and working- class populations, predominantly communities of color, in the areas of immigration, housing, employment, and reentry law. We maximize our impact by coupling direct services with community education, technical assistance, and policy advocacy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mentorship, supervision, and professional development support to a team of staff and pro bono volunteers, including at limited scope clinics (occasionally during evenings and weekends), and reviewing and providing feedback on work product

  • Assist with grant management, including ensuring accountability with data collection and data entry

  • Contribute to CLSEPA’s advocacy and community engagement work, including building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders

  • Represent CLSEPA at conferences, coalitions, and community events

  • Provide legal advice and representation in immigration matters before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Immigration Court, Board of Immigration Appeals, state courts to obtain Special Immigrant Juvenile Status findings (if licensed to practice in California), and potentially Circuit or District Courts representation

  • Provide legal advice and counsel on immigration issues, including participating in clinics (occasionally taking place during evenings or weekends) and assisting with emergency cases

  • Manage a diverse caseload and assist direct reports with managing and organizing caseloads, including maintaining and updating a caseload calendar, which requires diligent and accurate recordkeeping and file management due to the long-term nature of immigration cases, and

  • Stay informed and up to date with immigration law and procedural updates.

Qualifications

  • Bar membership (any state);

  • Fluency in Spanish;

  • A minimum of 6 years post-law school experience;

  • Experience in the field of immigration law;

  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income populations and communities of color;

  • Excellent listening and written and oral communication skills;

  • A desire to be a manager and mentor, including providing feedback and mentorship

  • Ability to relate to and communicate with a broad range of clients and colleagues; and

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others, both within the organization and in the community.

Compensation

  • This is a full-time exempt position with the following starting annualized salary ranges (dependent on years out of law school):

    • Managing Attorney: $105,000-$125,000

    The ranges provided are CLSEPA’s reasonable estimates of the base compensation for this/these roles. The actual salary amount may be higher or lower, based on non-discriminatory factors such as experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
